PMK stays neutral in Madurantakam and Dharapuram byelections, cites strained AIADMK ties

The Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) has chosen to remain neutral in the upcoming byelections to the reserved constituencies of Madurantakam and Dharapuram, with senior party leaders attributing the decision to its troubled relationship with the AIADMK.

Speaking privately, a senior PMK leader said the AIADMK leadership's approach remained a persistent obstacle to what he described as a natural alliance. He pointed to the rejection of the party's suggestion that Poovai M. Jagan Moorthy be fielded in Madurantakam, saying the proposal was turned down. In his view, the PMK's inputs are not being given due weight and there has been no meaningful consultation between the two parties since the elections.

Another leader said the party was content to wait and watch, with its leadership believing it will play a pivotal role in future elections. The party is said to be concentrating on building on the positive perception it has gained, which it credits to the performance of PMK floor leader Sowmiya Anbumani in the Assembly.

The leader noted that her speeches have been well received on social media and that a shift in perception is visible among younger voters and the public at large, who see her as approachable, fair and knowledgeable. The party intends to consolidate these gains, he added, suggesting that an alliance decision could be taken before the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.

Despite the strain, the PMK has not officially left the AIADMK-led National Democratic Alliance.
