PMK to stay neutral in Madurantakam and Dharapuram bypolls, says Anbumani

PMK president Anbumani Ramadoss said the party will not back any candidate in the Madurantakam and Dharapuram Assembly bypolls.

The Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) will not extend support to any party in the coming Assembly bypolls for the Madurantakam and Dharapuram (SC) constituencies, party president Anbumani Ramadoss said on Friday.

In a statement, Mr. Ramadoss said the position was arrived at after discussions with the party's state executives and with office-bearers from the districts covering the two seats. "I would like to inform you that after consultations with the state executives of the PMK and the executives of the districts comprising the two constituencies, it has been decided not to support any party," he said.

The announcement comes amid signs of growing proximity between the PMK and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam since the May 4 election results. PMK floor leader Sowmiya Anbumani and Mr. Ramadoss met the Water Resources Minister and TVK general secretary N. Anand to discuss water projects. Mr. Ramadoss was also recently seen playing badminton with Public Works Department Minister Aadhav Arjuna.

The decision is expected to affect the AIADMK's prospects, particularly in Madurantakam, where the PMK is understood to have a strong support base.
