PNGRB, EESL join hands for smart piped gas meters

The Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) and Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) have signed a memorandum of understanding to drive the large-scale deployment of smart domestic piped natural gas (PNG) meters across India's city gas distribution (CGD) network.
The collaboration is expected to modernise gas metering with features such as digital monitoring, tamper alerts, leak detection, remote operations and built-in cyber-security safeguards. These upgrades aim to make the PNG ecosystem more efficient, transparent and secure for consumers.
PNGRB brings its regulatory oversight of the CGD sector, while EESL contributes its experience in demand aggregation and executing large-scale smart-metering programmes. The partnership comes as PNG connections expand rapidly in urban and semi-urban areas, where traditional manual meter reading and periodic billing are increasingly challenged by issues of accuracy, revenue assurance, safety monitoring and customer service.
The initiative is expected to benefit stakeholders across all states, including Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.
