Poland Unveils Europe's Tallest Statue of Virgin Mary in Tiny Village
A Polish billionaire's 55.6-meter Virgin Mary statue, Europe's tallest, was inaugurated in Konotopie, surpassing Rio's Christ the Redeemer.
A colossal statue of the Virgin Mary, believed to be the tallest in Europe, was officially inaugurated on Saturday in Konotopie, a small village in central Poland with a population of under 150. The monument, which stands 55.6 meters (182 feet) tall, includes a 15-meter (49-foot) crown-shaped pedestal.
The statue surpasses the height of Rio de Janeiro's iconic Christ the Redeemer, which measures approximately 38 meters (125 feet) including its pedestal. It also exceeds Poland's Christ the King statue in Swiebodzin, which, including its mound, rises about 52 meters (170 feet) above the ground. While a larger statue of the Virgin Mary exists in the Philippines at roughly 98 meters (322 feet), the new Polish monument is considered the largest of its kind in Europe.
The monument was commissioned by Roman and Grażyna Karkosik, a wealthy couple who reside in a small palace a few kilometers from the village. Roman Karkosik, an entrepreneur who built his fortune through investments on the Warsaw Stock Exchange, has become one of Poland's wealthiest individuals. The couple stated the statue is an expression of gratitude to God, following an illness suffered by Roman Karkosik.
Local authorities anticipate the monument will become both a significant pilgrimage site and a tourist attraction. A viewing platform has been built inside the pedestal for visitors. The inauguration comes as the influence of the Catholic Church in public life, while still strong in rural areas, has gradually declined in recent years, particularly among younger Poles and urban populations.
