Portugal's Beachgoers Celebrate Rare Solar Eclipse

On Wednesday, beachgoers in Portugal were treated to a rare solar eclipse, with many gathering at Costa da Caparica, south of Lisbon, to witness the celestial event. The alignment of the sun, moon, and Earth briefly darkened skies across parts of mainland Europe, with the best views reported in Portugal and Spain.

At the beach, people lined up to receive solar protection glasses, while others arrived prepared. As the eclipse began, onlookers watched through filters, with some applauding at its peak. One couple was even seen dancing during the event.

Tourist Michael Frost from Wales said, "The sun is always worth celebrating, I mean every sunset, but this is particularly one to dance to and to celebrate in all of its entirety."

Mary Mennuti, an Italian living in Portugal, described the experience as emotional. "Just looking at the eclipse reminds me of our connection with the universe and the unknown," she said, adding that being on the beach made it "pretty cool."

Local beachgoer Maria Melo Silva, watching with her daughter, said, "It was really nice, we didn't expect it to be that way and with the glasses it makes all the difference. Wow it was really beautiful."

However, not everyone was fully satisfied. Ana Vilares admitted to slight disappointment, saying, "I thought it would be all dark. The 5% missing was enough for the light to never really go away."

The eclipse also passed over parts of Greenland and Iceland, but Portugal and Spain offered some of the best vantage points in Europe.
