'Practical Magic 2' Cast Reunites in London to Pass the Broomstick

Nearly three decades after the original film's release, Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman have reunited on screen as the Owens sisters in "Practical Magic 2." The sequel, which premiered in London on Wednesday, brings back the magical family saga that has grown from a modest 1998 release into a beloved cult classic.

The new film picks up roughly 25 years after the events of the first movie. It follows the Owens women as they come together to break the curse that has kept them from finding lasting love. Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest reprise their roles as the eccentric aunts Frances and Jet, while Joey King and Maisie Williams join the cast as Sally's daughters, Kylie and Antonia.

Bullock and Kidman also served as producers on the project. For Bullock, the film marks her return to acting after a four-year hiatus. Kidman reflected on the significance of the moment at the premiere, noting that she and Bullock never imagined they would still be leading a major studio film as women 28 years after the original.

"We're hoping we pass the baton to our beautiful baby witches," Kidman said, "and at the same time, it's so lovely still being given the spotlight."

Channing and Wiest credited the film's existence to the fans who championed the original for years. "They asked for this to be done," Channing said. Wiest added that the project grew from a groundswell of support, particularly from women supporting other women.

Directed by Danish filmmaker Susanne Bier, the sequel draws from Alice Hoffman's 2021 novel "The Book of Magic." Bullock said the film preserves the essence of the first movie, including its humor, its willingness to explore darker moments, and the unapologetic affection between the characters.

"Practical Magic 2" begins its global theatrical rollout on September 9.
