President Murmu Urges Film Stars to Shun Endorsements of Harmful Products at National Film Awards

President Droupadi Murmu has called on popular film artists to refrain from endorsing substances that are harmful to health, noting the enormous influence they wield over the country's people, particularly its youth.

Speaking at the 72nd National Film Awards ceremony held at Ekta Nagar in Kevadia, Gujarat, the President said that when successful film artists speak about the benefits of a disciplined lifestyle, millions of children and young people follow their example. "A true star is one who spreads light, not darkness," she said.

At the function, the President conferred the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for 2024 on veteran actor Anant Nag, recognising his outstanding contribution to Indian cinema.

Several other winners were honoured at the ceremony. Yami Gautam received the Best Actress in a Leading Role award for 'Article 370', while Kartik Aaryan and Mammootty shared the Best Actor in a Leading Role award for 'Chandu Champion' and 'Bramayugam' respectively. 'Srikanth' was named Best Hindi Film.

In her address, the President said 'Article 370' presents a vivid account of the serious challenges to the country's unity and their solutions, while the non-feature film 'Bhangaar' expresses unseen dimensions related to life and death, meaning and meaninglessness. She described 'Swatantrya Veer Savarkar' as an artistic tribute to the extraordinary life story of Veer Savarkar, and said 'Bhakshak' raises societal awareness about the extremely serious issue of women's safety. The national-level recognition of the Santhali film 'Angen', she added, has encouraged that film and fostered cultural diversity and social inclusion.
