Putin Says Ukraine Settlement Possible, Thanks US and China for Mediation Efforts
Putin thanks US, China for settlement efforts, says Ukraine peace possible but attacks complicate talks.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday that a settlement with Ukraine is possible, while expressing gratitude to the United States, China, and other nations for their efforts to mediate an end to the conflict.
Speaking at the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok, Putin said, "Is there a chance? In my view, yes." He acknowledged that both Washington and Beijing have consistently raised the issue and sought to contribute to a peaceful resolution. However, he stressed that the ultimate solution must come from the parties directly involved—Russia and Ukraine.
Putin also voiced concern over recent Ukrainian actions, including seizures of civilian vessels and strikes on merchant ships, as well as reported threats to civilian aircraft. He described these as "acts of state-sponsored terrorism" that "undoubtedly complicate the prospects for bilateral peace talks." He accused Ukraine's Western allies of becoming "complicit in international terrorism" by remaining silent on such incidents.
On relations with the United States, Putin confirmed that contacts are ongoing through intelligence channels and representatives appointed by President Donald Trump. He expressed hope for restoring full-scale ties, noting that Trump appears committed to "positive, constructive engagement." Putin also acknowledged ongoing contacts with Ukraine, primarily through special services, though he said it was difficult to assess their progress given recent statements from Kyiv's leadership.
During his remarks, Putin also welcomed actor Steven Seagal, calling him a "great friend of Russia" and an "outstanding emissary of peace."
