Putin, Trump Discuss Swift End to Ukraine War in Phone Call
Putin and Trump spoke by phone about ending the Ukraine war, with both leaders backing a swift resolution and full restoration of bilateral relations.
Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump held a phone conversation on Tuesday, during which Trump emphasised the need for a swift conclusion to the war in Ukraine, according to the Kremlin.
Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov told reporters that the two leaders discussed the outcome of a weekend visit to Moscow and Kyiv by US peace negotiators. Both presidents reportedly assessed the discussions positively, with Ushakov saying they rated the results "with a plus sign."
During the call, Putin outlined his assessment of the current battlefield situation and conveyed that Russia harbours no hostile intentions toward Europe. He also shared his views on what Washington could do to help end the conflict.
Ushakov quoted Trump as stressing the desirability of ending the conflict as soon as possible, which would open up "impressive and far-reaching" prospects for fully restoring US-Russia relations. The Kremlin aide said Trump believes such a breakthrough would particularly benefit trade and economic ties between the two nations.
"Donald Trump is keen to see a breakthrough achieved during his presidency," Ushakov said. "Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin supported this approach."
The two leaders also agreed on the need to continue prisoner exchanges, Ushakov added. While declining to provide further details of the discussion, he described the conversation as constructive and said both presidents agreed to remain in contact and speak by phone again if necessary.
