Qatar rejects claims it detained Iranian pilots after airspace breach
Qatar denies detaining Iranian pilots, saying they violated its airspace and were shot down; one body was returned to Iran.
Qatar has firmly denied social media claims that it detained Iranian pilots, calling the assertions misleading and poorly timed given ongoing regional diplomatic efforts.
In a statement on X, Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesman Majed Al Ansari said authorities had made contact with the pilots after they violated Qatari airspace. When they did not respond to communication attempts, Qatar said it took defensive measures in line with international law and its rules of engagement.
Al Ansari added that search and rescue teams later recovered the remains of one pilot, which were handed over to Iran through official coordination channels.
The denial follows remarks from an Iranian military commander who said Qatari forces had captured three pilots after their jets were shot down in March while returning from a mission against a U.S. base in Qatar. The commander said a fourth pilot was killed in the incident.
The downing came amid heightened tensions after joint U.S.-Israeli strikes on Tehran in late February killed Iran's then-Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and other officials. Iran subsequently launched missile and drone attacks on Israeli and U.S. targets across the region.
The remains of the slain pilot, Majid Kazemi, were returned to Iran and buried in Shiraz in late July.
