Qatar Sets Up Doha Investment to Focus on Domestic Deals
Qatar's prime minister announced Doha Investment, a QIA division that will pursue domestic investments, a change from the fund's overseas focus.
Qatar has created a new division within its sovereign wealth fund to pursue investments inside the country, a move that redirects part of the state's financial machinery toward the domestic economy.
The announcement was made by Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani. The unit, named Doha Investment, will operate under the Qatar Investment Authority and will concentrate on developing domestic investment opportunities.
The decision marks a change in direction for the QIA, which has spent years building a portfolio of assets abroad. By setting up a dedicated arm for the home market, the fund is formally extending its mandate to projects and businesses within Qatar.
No details were provided on the size of the new division, the sectors it will target, or the timeline for its first investments. The prime minister's statement did not specify how Doha Investment would be funded or how it would relate to the QIA's existing operations.
The QIA is one of the world's largest sovereign wealth funds, with holdings that span listed equities, real estate, infrastructure and private companies across multiple regions. Its overseas investments have made it a prominent player in global markets.
The creation of a domestic-focused division suggests a rebalancing of priorities, though the fund's international portfolio is expected to remain a central part of its strategy. Further particulars on Doha Investment's structure and objectives were not immediately available.
