Qatar Warns Hormuz Closure Is an International Crisis as US-Iran Tensions Rise

Qatar's Foreign Ministry has issued a stark warning that the ongoing closure of the Strait of Hormuz has evolved into an international crisis, as hostilities between the United States and Iran intensify. Speaking at his weekly briefing in Doha, ministry spokesman Majid al-Ansari stressed that the current escalation serves no one's interests and that the status quo is untenable.

"This rise will not be in the interest of anyone," al-Ansari said, referring to the escalating conflict. He emphasized that the effects of the closure are being felt far beyond the region, impacting global food supplies, medical industries reliant on helium, and energy markets. "It has entered homes in far geographies where they have nothing to do with the crisis here," he added.

Al-Ansari reiterated Qatar's commitment to working with regional and international partners to find a diplomatic solution. The goal, he stated, is to guarantee the strait remains open, ensure the security of the region, and address the aspirations of its people for prosperity.

The comments come amid renewed fighting, with the U.S. military reporting strikes on new targets in Iran after Tehran attempted to attack commercial shipping in the strait. Recent days have seen the U.S. strike rocket launchers on Larak Island, Iran respond with missile attacks on U.S. sites in Jordan, and the United Arab Emirates intercept an Iranian drone over its waters. The closure of this strategic waterway has already disrupted shipping and raised significant concerns over global energy supplies and other essential goods.
