Worker dies as compressor-tractor plunges into water-filled quarry pit in Kerala

A worker was killed on Saturday morning when the compressor-tractor he was operating at a laterite quarry in Vettilappara, near Areekode, overturned and fell into a deep, water-filled pit. The accident took place around 11 a.m. while the machine was being used to break stones at the site.

The deceased has been identified as Unais, a resident of Makkaraparamba near Malappuram. Preliminary reports suggest he lost control of the vehicle while manoeuvring it near the edge of the pit, causing it to topple over and sink. He is believed to have been trapped inside the cabin as the machine went under.

Following the incident, personnel from the Fire and Rescue Services, along with a scuba diving team, launched an extensive search operation. The water in the pit was reported to be more than 20 feet deep, which made the recovery effort challenging. After a prolonged search, the rescue team managed to retrieve the body from the submerged vehicle.

The body was later taken to the Government Medical College Hospital in Manjeri for post-mortem procedures. Authorities have registered a case and are investigating the circumstances leading to the fatal accident.
