Queen Camilla Recalls Struggle to Keep King's Cancer Diagnosis Secret

Queen Camilla reveals the challenge of concealing King Charles III's cancer diagnosis during a visit to a Maggie's centre a week before it was made public.

Queen Camilla has spoken publicly for the first time about the challenge of concealing King Charles III's cancer diagnosis in the days before it was officially announced. In a video released to mark the 30th anniversary of the cancer charity Maggie's, she described the difficulty of staying silent during a visit to one of the charity's support centres.

Camilla, who has been president of Maggie's since 2008, opened a new support centre at the Royal Free Hospital in London just a week before the palace confirmed on February 5, 2024, that the King was undergoing treatment for an undisclosed form of cancer. The announcement broke with royal tradition, which has typically kept such health matters private.

During the visit, Camilla said she was "longing" to discuss her husband's condition but knew she could not. "Nobody could say anything at that time. That was quite difficult," she said in the video, which was based on a conversation with Maggie's Chief Executive Laura Lee. "I almost said something but, you know, I felt that it wasn't the time to say."

The King's decision to speak openly about his diagnosis has been credited with encouraging more men to seek testing for prostate cancer and other conditions. Maggie's, which operates support centres at 27 hospitals across the UK, reported a 12% increase in the number of men visiting its centres since the announcement.

Camilla said the experience gave her a deeper understanding of the services Maggie's provides, which include information, counselling, and practical support to help patients manage their fears and continue with daily life during treatment. Reflecting on her husband's approach, she said: "Look at my husband, nothing stopped him. He just said, 'This is my way. I'm going to cope with it.'"

Recent updates on the King's health indicate his condition is moving in a positive direction as he continues to receive treatment.
