Railways Tightens Catering Oversight, Speeds Up Rail Madad Grievance Redressal

Indian Railways is set to overhaul its catering oversight and passenger grievance mechanisms, following a high-level review of the IRCTC War Room by Railway Board Chairman and CEO Satish Kumar. The review focused on making monitoring systems more responsive and technology-driven.

The Rail Madad interface will be further automated to simplify how passengers register concerns. Officials have been directed to closely track these complaints and, where necessary, interact directly with passengers to resolve issues effectively.

To boost accountability, the Railway Board has instructed each inspecting agency to systematically document deficiencies found during inspections and their own performance. This data will enable continuous evaluation, and agencies found consistently ineffective could face review or delisting.

Real-time monitoring of railway kitchens is also being expanded. Currently, four camera feeds are available; additional cameras will now be installed in raw material storage areas, along with PTZ (Pan-Tilt-Zoom) cameras for broader surveillance. The kitchen at Anantapur in South Central Railway was flagged for improvement based on inspection and video monitoring. The preparation process for roti and paratha will also be examined closely.

Artificial Intelligence-based systems, used to detect issues like rodents and cockroaches, will now trigger follow-up action. The Board stressed that AI alerts must lead to warning letters and corrective measures, not just detection.

The initiatives aim to strengthen passenger confidence, improve food quality and hygiene, and create a more responsive, passenger-centric catering ecosystem across Indian Railways.
