Pilot's Barmer Outreach Signals New Caste Equations Within Rajasthan Congress
Sachin Pilot's joint appearance with Jat leaders in Barmer signals a new caste coalition within Rajasthan Congress, challenging the Gehlot faction's hold.
A seemingly routine Congress gathering in Dhorimanna, a desert town in Barmer district, has emerged as a significant political marker. The event, held to unveil a statue of former sarpanch Gordhana Ram Vishnoi, saw Sachin Pilot share the stage with prominent Jat leaders Hemaram Chaudhary and Harish Chaudhary, signalling a potential realignment within the Rajasthan Congress.
The optics were deliberate. Pilot arrived in a vehicle driven by Harish Chaudhary, a Baytu MLA, with Hemaram Chaudhary seated in the back. This display of unity brings together the Bishnoi community, to which the late Gordhana Ram belonged, and the Jats, a dominant force in western Rajasthan.
Jats constitute a significant vote bank, concentrated in districts like Barmer, Bikaner, and the Shekhawati region. The Bishnois, while smaller in number, are known for voting as a monolithic block. Together, these communities can influence outcomes in up to 30 assembly seats in the western part of the state.
A long-standing Jat grievance has been the absence of a chief minister from their community, despite their numerical strength. This sentiment has historically created friction with the Congress, particularly with former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, who is seen as having a trust deficit with prominent Jat dynasties.
Harish Chaudhary, once a Gehlot loyalist who supported him during the 2020 feud with Pilot, used the occasion to take a veiled swipe at his former boss. He praised leaders like Hemaram Chaudhary for voluntarily stepping away from power, a contrast to Gehlot's famous remark about the chair not leaving him.
The presence of minority leaders like Gafur Khan at the rally further underscores the attempt to build a broader coalition. The absence of Mewaram Jain, a senior Congress leader from Barmer and a close Gehlot aide, was conspicuous.
With both Gehlot and Pilot remaining largely on the sidelines of the ongoing urban local body polls, this event in Barmer is being read as an opening move in the battle for the party's future leadership in the state. The political contours within the Congress are clearly shifting.
