Rajasthan's educated youth face 33% jobless rate as farm work rises
Rajasthan's graduate unemployment stands at 33%. Youth share in farm work rose from 39.3% to 47% in seven years.
Rajasthan is grappling with a stark jobs crisis among its most educated citizens, with unemployment among graduates and those with higher qualifications touching 33 percent. The figure underscores a widening gap between the aspirations of the state's young workforce and the availability of suitable employment opportunities.
At the same time, data points to a significant shift in where new work is actually being generated. The agriculture sector has emerged as the primary source of additional employment over the past seven years. During this period, the share of young workers in farming activities has climbed from 39.3 percent to 47.0 percent.
The trend suggests that while the state's youth are eager to work, the formal economy is not absorbing them at the required pace. Instead, a growing proportion is turning to agriculture, a sector traditionally seen as a fallback rather than a first choice for educated job seekers.
This mismatch between educational attainment and employment quality raises concerns about underemployment and the long-term viability of relying on farm-based livelihoods. With a third of graduates jobless, the pressure on Rajasthan's policymakers to diversify its economic base and create adequate, skill-appropriate jobs has never been more acute.
