Rajkumar Hirani confirms '3 Idiots' sequel with original cast, set 20 years later
Rajkumar Hirani says the '3 Idiots' sequel is being written, will feature the original cast, and is set 20 years after the first film.
Filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani has offered the first concrete update on the long-rumoured sequel to his 2009 blockbuster '3 Idiots'. Speaking about the project, Hirani confirmed that the film is currently in the writing stage and will bring back the original cast, including Aamir Khan, R. Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, Boman Irani, and Kareena Kapoor Khan.
Hirani revealed that the sequel will be set two decades after the events of the original film. The story will explore where the beloved characters find themselves in life 20 years later, moving beyond their college days. He explained that he and co-writer Abhijat Joshi were developing a separate narrative when they realised it fit perfectly with the lives of these characters.
Despite the excitement around the project, Hirani struck a cautious note. He emphasised that the film will only go into production if the script meets his standards. If the story does not come together well, he would rather not make the sequel at all. For now, the team remains focused on the writing process, with no timeline announced for production or release.
'3 Idiots', produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, became one of Indian cinema's most iconic films. Its themes of pursuing passion over societal pressure resonated deeply with students and young audiences, and it continues to be remembered fondly more than 17 years after its release.
