India, Sri Lanka Must Jointly Secure Indian Ocean: Rajnath Singh
Rajnath Singh in Colombo stresses secure sea lanes for IOR prosperity, urging stronger India-Sri Lanka maritime cooperation.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has underscored the critical importance of secure sea lanes and freedom of navigation for the collective security and prosperity of the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). Speaking at the Sri Lankan Ministry of Defence in Colombo on September 09, 2026, he called for enhanced cooperation between India and Sri Lanka to shape a favourable maritime environment and address emerging challenges before they escalate into serious threats.
Singh asserted that national security and economic growth are intrinsically linked to geography, and neither country can afford to remain indifferent to regional developments. He emphasised the need to further strengthen the longstanding India-Sri Lanka defence partnership, with a special focus on maritime cooperation. He proposed devising joint protocols, sharpening skills, and sharing experiences to counter threats arising from rapidly evolving global dynamics.
The Minister highlighted the progress achieved in bilateral maritime cooperation, particularly in Search & Rescue Operations, counter-narcotics, anti-piracy, and efforts against human trafficking. He cited the commissioning of the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre as an example of shared commitment to safe seas. Singh also envisaged a future with a mutually beneficial, integrated Maritime Domain Awareness system for real-time information sharing to tackle illegal fishing, smuggling, and terrorism.
Addressing the challenges faced by fishermen, Singh stressed the need for a joint approach. He suggested extending cooperation beyond security to include aquaculture, marine biotechnology, and maritime tourism. He also proposed exploring a joint Maritime Humanitarian Assistance & Disaster Relief (HADR) system for coordinated responses to natural and man-made disasters.
Describing India as a true 'Vishwa Mitra', Singh reiterated India's commitment to playing a constructive role in its neighbourhood. He expressed confidence that India and Sri Lanka, as close maritime partners, are well positioned to jointly safeguard peace and stability across the IOR. During his visit, Singh laid a wreath at the Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF) Memorial in Battaramulla.
