India, Sri Lanka Deepen Defence Ties as Rajnath Singh Calls on President in Colombo

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh met Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake in Colombo on September 9, 2026, in a visit that underscored the breadth of the bilateral partnership. The discussions covered the full spectrum of ties between the two nations, which are rooted in shared history and mutual trust.

Both sides reiterated their commitment to work together for development and regional stability. Singh conveyed greetings from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and highlighted the deep people-to-people connections between the countries.

President Dissanayake assured Singh that Sri Lanka would not permit its territory to be used for activities against India's security interests. He also expressed gratitude for India's assistance during Cyclone Ditwah under Operation Sagar Bandhu, as well as for New Delhi's rehabilitation package for the island nation.

Singh emphasised that India views itself as a first responder for Sri Lanka, calling it a responsibility rather than a favour. He said this support would continue in the future.

The leaders virtually inaugurated three Bailey Bridges constructed by the Indian Defence Forces. They also exchanged MoUs covering the upgradation of six L70 air defence guns for the Sri Lankan Air Force under an Indian grant, and cooperation between the National Cadet Corps and National Defence Colleges of both countries.

The L70 gun upgradation is expected to strengthen air defence for critical assets in Sri Lanka. The academic and youth exchange pacts aim to deepen institutional ties between the two nations.
