Punk Icons Unite at Hollywood Forever to Mark 50 Years of the Ramones
Musicians and actors paid tribute to the Ramones at a 50th anniversary event in Los Angeles, featuring performances and a special screening.
A star-studded gathering took place at the Hollywood Forever cemetery in Los Angeles on Sunday to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Ramones' self-titled debut album. The event brought together a mix of punk rock royalty and Hollywood talent to celebrate the band's enduring legacy.
Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong, blink-182's Travis Barker, and Rancid's Tim Armstrong joined forces with C.J. Ramone to form the Cretin Family band for the occasion. They performed a selection of Ramones classics for the crowd, and were joined on stage by the Los Angeles punk band the Linda Lindas.
Billy Idol also made an appearance, performing with the group. Reflecting on the Ramones' impact, Idol recalled the seismic shift the band caused in the music scene. "Feels like the Roundhouse 1976 that's what this feels like," he said, referencing a legendary London venue. "The Ramones album, we all sped our music up to that, except for the Pistols. Everybody else sped their music up 'cos we heard the Ramones album."
The event also featured an appearance by actor John Travolta, who introduced a screening of the horror classic "Carrie," which was also released in 1976 and featured Travolta in a supporting role. He noted the coincidence of both cultural touchstones celebrating their 50th anniversaries this year.
The tribute was held at the site of the Johnny Ramone statue and shrine, a fitting location for an event honoring the band's lasting influence on music and popular culture.
