Seven-year-old undergoes rare jaw tumour surgery at Chidambaram dental hospital

A seven-year-old boy has successfully undergone a rare and complex surgical procedure at the Cuddalore Government Dental College and Hospital in Chidambaram. The child was diagnosed with a Giant Cell Granuloma, an uncommon tumour-like lesion affecting the upper jaw.

The boy's family had approached the hospital after noticing a progressively enlarging swelling in his upper jaw. The condition had also led to difficulty in breathing and eating, along with mobility of the teeth. Following a detailed clinical examination and investigations, the medical team identified the lesion as a Giant Cell Granuloma of the maxilla.

Given the rapid increase in the size of the lesion and its impact on the child's airway, doctors decided to proceed with urgent surgical intervention. Administering general anaesthesia posed a significant challenge due to the patient's young age and the location and extent of the tumour. The anaesthesia team managed the case with considerable skill, ensuring safe administration throughout the procedure.

A team of oral and maxillofacial surgeons carried out the complex operation, which lasted four hours. The tumour was completely removed during the surgery. The procedure was deemed highly challenging due to the rarity of the lesion, its position in the upper jaw, and the associated airway compromise.

The child is currently recovering well and remains stable under medical observation. Doctors have advised parents to seek specialist evaluation without delay if children develop rapidly increasing jaw swelling, tooth mobility, or difficulty in eating and breathing.
