Five dead, 30 hurt as bus collides with truck in MP's Rewa

At least five people died and 30 others were injured when a passenger bus collided with a truck on National Highway 39 in Madhya Pradesh's Rewa district on Wednesday afternoon, police said.

The crash occurred around 4:30 p.m. near Badwar, roughly 30 kilometres from the district headquarters, under the Gudh police station area. The impact of the collision was severe enough to overturn the truck and push the bus into a water-filled drain beside the road.

Local residents were the first to respond, rushing to help the trapped passengers and alerting authorities. Police and district administration teams soon arrived and launched a combined rescue operation, with multiple ambulances ferrying the injured to Sanjay Gandhi Hospital in Rewa.

Additional Superintendent of Police Bhavana Maravi confirmed the death toll and said all injured passengers had been admitted for treatment. She added that rescue teams were still checking the bus to ensure no one remained trapped.

Sub-Divisional Magistrate Anurag Tiwari said extra beds had been reserved at the hospital to accommodate any additional casualties requiring urgent care.

Chief Minister Mohan Yadav expressed grief over the incident and announced financial assistance of ₹2 lakh for the families of the deceased and ₹1 lakh for those seriously injured. In a post on X, he described the news as "extremely heartbreaking" and offered prayers for the departed and a speedy recovery for the wounded.

The cause of the accident is under investigation. NH-39, which connects Jhansi in Uttar Pradesh to Ranchi in Jharkhand, passes through Madhya Pradesh and is a major freight and passenger corridor.
