Riksbank Signals Possible Rate Hike as Inflation Risks Persist

Sweden's Riksbank held rates at 1.75% but minutes show Governor Erik Thedeen sees a hike as the likely next move if summer inflation proves sticky.

Sweden's central bank has left its policy rate unchanged at 1.75%, but the minutes of its latest meeting reveal a heightened sense of caution over inflation. Governor Erik Thedeen indicated that the next adjustment to the policy rate may need to be an increase, though he stressed that the timing remains uncertain.

The Riksbank's decision comes against a backdrop of mixed economic signals. Headline inflation in Sweden stood at just 0.7% in July on an annual basis, and there are signs of muted corporate pricing intentions. Oil prices have also retreated from their earlier peaks, while the labour market remains soft despite a recent uptick in economic growth.

However, several factors are complicating the picture. The low headline figure is partly flattered by temporary tax cuts introduced during an election year, and underlying price pressures have run hotter than anticipated over the summer months. The central bank also noted that the conflict in the Middle East could spill over and push prices higher in Sweden.

Governor Thedeen underscored the need for vigilance, stating that the level of alertness regarding rising inflation must remain high. The Riksbank's next monetary policy decision is scheduled for September 24.
