Romanian Divers Destroy Two Drones Near Black Sea Gas Project

Romanian army divers have destroyed two Gerbera-type drones that were found drifting in the Black Sea's exclusive economic zone, close to the Neptun Deep offshore gas project. Defence Minister Radu Miruta confirmed the operation on Tuesday.

The drones were first spotted by a vessel involved in the construction of the Neptun Deep project, which is the largest offshore gas initiative in the European Union. After the discovery, Romanian authorities sought confirmation from Ukraine, which stated that the drones did not belong to its forces.

The incident highlights ongoing security concerns in the region, where maritime infrastructure has become increasingly vulnerable. The Neptun Deep project, located in the Black Sea, is a key energy venture for Romania and the EU, and any disruption near it is taken seriously.

The defence ministry did not provide further details on the origin of the drones or the exact location of the operation. The area remains under close monitoring as part of broader efforts to safeguard critical energy infrastructure.
