An explosion at Rotterdam port on Thursday killed one and injured several. Investigators and labor inspectors are probing the cause.
A powerful explosion rocked the Port of Rotterdam on Thursday morning, claiming at least one life and leaving several others injured, according to local police.
The blast occurred at approximately 11:30 a.m. local time, prompting a large emergency response. Police spokesman Daan Valkenburg confirmed the death and injuries, expressing condolences to the families of those affected.
Forensic teams and labor inspectorate officials have been deployed to the site to determine the cause of the explosion. "We are currently investigating how the explosion occurred," Valkenburg said, adding that the investigation will establish both the circumstances and the sequence of events.
In a separate incident, emergency services reported a major power failure in another part of the port after a transformer caught fire under unexplained circumstances. Power supply was gradually restored later in the day.
The Port of Rotterdam, one of the busiest in the world, has seen its operations temporarily disrupted as authorities secure the area and conduct their probe. Further details are expected as the investigation progresses.
