Rubio Signals Focus on Venezuela Transition, Debt and Return of Expatriates
Marco Rubio said discussions have covered rebuilding confidence in Venezuela's economy, debt restructuring and the political transition under way.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly that discussions on Venezuela have addressed ways to rebuild confidence in the country's economy, including debt restructuring and the political transition currently under way.
Speaking to reporters, Rubio offered few specifics about the meeting held on Tuesday between President Donald Trump and Venezuela's acting president, Delcy Rodríguez.
He said the aim is to reach a point where Venezuelans who have left the country feel confident enough to return and rebuild what they lost, or what was taken from them, both politically and economically.
"We would like to see a point where they sit down and have the confidence that they can really return and rebuild what they lost, or rebuild what was taken from them on the political front, but also on the economic front," he said.
For that to happen, Rubio added, greater progress is needed in those conversations regarding transition and reconciliation.
