Russia Downs 269 Ukrainian Drones; Kyiv Faces $27 Billion Defense Gap

Russian air defense systems intercepted and destroyed 269 Ukrainian fixed-wing drones across multiple regions within a 12-hour window on Sunday, according to the Russian Defense Ministry. The ministry said the operations took place between 08:00 and 20:00 Moscow time.

The announcement comes amid continued Ukrainian long-range strikes on Russian infrastructure. A day earlier, President Vladimir Putin characterized the sustained drone and missile attacks on civilian and logistics targets as "another gamble" by Ukraine and its Western allies, aimed at inflicting a strategic defeat on Russia. Putin asserted that Russian forces are maintaining offensives along all fronts and increasing military pressure.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky outlined pressing financial challenges, stating that the country faces a $27 billion defense budget deficit for the year. He said Kyiv expects €30 billion from the European Union to help cover its broader fiscal shortfall.

Addressing the question of elections, Zelensky ruled out holding a vote under current conditions, describing it as a potential "tsunami" that could tear the country apart. He said elections could only be discussed if international partners provide concrete security guarantees ensuring the vote could be conducted safely, legitimately, and democratically without the threat of strikes.

This position contrasts with that of former Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, who recently argued that Ukraine should find a legal and safe mechanism to hold elections despite the ongoing conflict. Ukraine's presidential election, originally scheduled for 2024, was postponed due to martial law, which has remained in effect since the escalation of the crisis.
