Russia welcomes India's peace efforts on Ukraine, says Peskov
Russia says it welcomes India's efforts for peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict and is in sync with New Delhi's approach.
Russia has indicated its support for India's diplomatic initiatives aimed at ending the conflict in Ukraine, with Moscow stating that its position closely aligns with New Delhi's. Russian presidential spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said on Tuesday that Russia welcomes any efforts by India to resolve the crisis through peaceful means.
Speaking at an online briefing, Peskov noted that Russia is aware of India's stance on the conflict and largely shares it, emphasizing a mutual desire for a peaceful solution. The remarks come ahead of a scheduled bilateral meeting between President Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the upcoming BRICS summit.
The 18th BRICS Summit is set to take place in New Delhi from September 11 to 13 at Bharat Mandapam. The meeting between the two leaders is expected to cover a range of bilateral and global issues.
Peskov also addressed other matters on the bilateral agenda, including ongoing negotiations for the construction of new nuclear power plants in India. Additionally, the potential sale of Su-57 fighter jets to India was mentioned as a topic for discussion.
On a separate issue, Peskov criticized a proposed U.S. plan to impose a 100% tariff on countries purchasing Russian crude oil, calling the move "illegal and unacceptable."
