Russia and North Korea Open First Road Bridge Across Tumen River

Russia and North Korea have officially opened their first road bridge connecting the two countries, a development that underscores their expanding strategic partnership. The structure spans the Tumen River and was inaugurated on Monday, according to Russian state media.

The new bridge is situated close to the existing "Friendship Bridge," a railway crossing that has been in operation since 1959, following the Korean War. While direct air and rail links between Moscow and Pyongyang already exist, this marks the first road connection.

Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, speaking at the opening ceremony via video link, expressed confidence that the bridge would stimulate growth in various sectors, including tourism, and lead to the creation of new jobs. He was quoted as saying that the expansion of cross-border transport infrastructure would provide a powerful impetus for further development in trade, economic, scientific, technological, and cultural cooperation.

Construction of the bridge began in April of the previous year, following an agreement reached during Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit to North Korea in 2024. The project had been under discussion for several years prior to that.

The opening comes amid significantly strengthened ties between the two nations since the onset of the war in Ukraine in 2022. In a notable development, Pyongyang has reportedly sent thousands of troops to Russia's Kursk region to assist in repelling a Ukrainian incursion that began in 2024.
