Russia and North Korea inaugurated a 1-km road bridge over the Tumen River, their first such link, to enhance bilateral ties.
Russia and North Korea have inaugurated the first road bridge connecting their territories across the Tumen River, marking a new phase in their bilateral relationship. The structure, which spans one kilometre and carries two lanes, is designed to handle up to 300 vehicles daily through a newly established border checkpoint.
Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, addressing the opening ceremony via video link, expressed confidence that the expanded transport infrastructure near the border would significantly advance trade, economic, technological, scientific, and cultural cooperation between the two nations.
The bridge adds to existing connectivity between the neighbours, which already share a railway bridge and air service. Plans for the automobile crossing were agreed upon in 2024, with construction commencing last year.
The development comes amid deepening engagement between Moscow and Pyongyang. North Korea has reportedly supplied ammunition and troops to support Russia's military campaign in Ukraine. Additionally, Russian tourists have been visiting North Korea since February 2024, following a gradual relaxation of pandemic-era restrictions.
