Russia's parliamentary election opens with early voting in the Far East

Voting has begun in Russia's parliamentary election, with polling stations in the Far East among the first to open on Friday. In Magadan, voters arrived at registration desks to collect their ballots, and a candidate for the State Duma was among those present as the process got under way.

The contest for the lower house of parliament, the State Duma, is taking place with the main Kremlin-aligned party, United Russia, positioned to retain its dominant majority alongside a small group of other parties supportive of President Vladimir Putin.

Officials and local residents framed the vote as a civic responsibility. Tatyana Pischanskaya, a resident of Magadan, described casting a ballot as a duty owed by citizens to the country and to their region. Bogdan Bulychev, a State Duma candidate, noted that voters in the Far East are traditionally among the first in the country to vote and urged them to take part before the weekend.

Among those voting in Magadan was the region's governor, Sergey Nosov, whose ballot was cast at a local polling station. An official from the Ministry of Emergency Situations was also seen at a registration desk.

The election is being held more than four years after the start of Russia's military operation in Ukraine, a period during which the country's political and economic landscape has visibly shifted.
