Russia Strikes Odesa Port Facilities and Romania Border Crossing
Russia attacked Odesa's port infrastructure and a Romania border crossing overnight, damaging export facilities and a thermal power plant.
Ukrainian officials reported that Russia launched an overnight attack on port infrastructure and a border crossing with Romania in the southern Odesa region. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy stated that the strike deliberately targeted a border crossing point on the Romanian frontier as well as export infrastructure.
The attack also affected energy facilities, with Ukraine's emergency service confirming a fire at a residential building that left one person injured. State energy firm Naftogaz later said its Odesa combined heat and power plant was hit by missiles and drones, causing damage to main and auxiliary equipment. Debris clearance is currently underway.
This assault is part of a recent pattern of intensified Russian drone strikes on Odesa's export infrastructure, which includes Ukraine's main Black Sea ports and the Danube river ports of Reni and Izmail. The seaports, once handling 90% of the country's exports, have been effectively blocked, forcing Kyiv to rely on lower-capacity Danube routes and western railway crossings.
The Ukrainian border service confirmed that the Orlivka checkpoint for ferry services on the Romanian border was damaged, leading to a temporary suspension of processing for citizens and vehicles.
The region endured over 300 air-raid alerts in August, totaling 238 hours, which has complicated railway operations. Despite these challenges, Ukrainian Railways reported an increase in grain deliveries to Danube ports for future exports.
