Russia and Ukraine Trade Deep Strikes as Zelensky Plans New York Talks with Trump

Russia and Ukraine exchanged accounts of intensified military action on Sunday, with Moscow reporting widespread strikes across Ukrainian territory and Kyiv claiming long-range attacks well inside Russia.

Russia's Defense Ministry said its forces struck 146 locations in Ukraine over the past day. The targets included transport infrastructure, ammunition and military supply depots, drone production and storage sites, and temporary deployment points for Ukrainian troops and foreign mercenaries.

The ministry also said Ukrainian forces had launched large-scale drone and missile attacks on Russian territory between Saturday and Sunday, describing the aim as an attempt to disrupt State Duma elections. It said Russian forces would continue and intensify the use of precision-guided weapons against military targets in Kyiv.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukraine had carried out long-range strikes against Russia's Moscow region on Sunday, hitting a key facility in the Russian oil industry and a logistics site. He said a facility in Russia's Voronezh region was also struck.

The 3rd Army Corps of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that Ukrainian forces had secured control over parts of the territory during a counteroffensive in the northern Donetsk region.

Separately, Zelensky said he had spoken by phone with U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday and that the two agreed to meet in New York in the near future. He said the meeting "could bring about significant changes" and noted that the diplomatic process is moving forward.

Zelensky referred to the recent visit to Kyiv by U.S. Presidential Envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff, saying in-depth discussions on key details had taken place. He said the Ukrainian side proposed measures on de-escalation, along with issues concerning energy security, food security and the protection of civilians.
