Moscow: Ukrainian Strikes on Grain Ports Worsen Global Food Crisis
Russia says Ukrainian strikes on grain terminals are worsening global food shortages and inflating prices, harming the Global South.
Russia has accused Ukraine of worsening the global food crisis through military strikes on its agricultural infrastructure. The Russian Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday that attacks on grain and fertiliser facilities are driving up international food prices and deepening shortages.
Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova made the remarks after a wave of Ukrainian strikes on the Black Sea port of Novorossiysk forced major grain terminals there to suspend operations. She argued that the disruption serves the interests of certain Western countries.
"All this exacerbates the shortage of grain and fertilisers, fuels the rise in global food prices, and increases the burden on the countries of the Global South and East," Zakharova said in a statement, describing those nations as being held hostage by what she called irresponsible policies.
The comments highlight the widening economic fallout of the conflict, with Moscow framing the attacks as a deliberate strategy that punishes vulnerable importers reliant on Black Sea grain exports.
