Russia and Ukraine trade overnight strikes; NATO jet downs drone over Romania

Russia and Ukraine exchanged heavy overnight strikes, with Moscow targeting a major steel plant and the Ukrainian capital, while Kyiv launched a significant drone attack on the Moscow region.

In Kryvyi Rih, President Zelenskiy's hometown, a Russian strike on the country's largest steel plant killed at least two people and injured 14 others. ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih reported damage to key production facilities in its power generation and blast furnace sectors, partially halting production.

Separately, a Russian missile attack on Kyiv early Sunday sparked fires in at least two districts, injuring three people. The regional governor reported three more injuries, including a child, from drone attacks across the Kyiv region.

Ukraine's response included a large-scale drone assault on the Moscow region, which Russian officials described as one of the largest since the conflict began. An 83-year-old man was killed, and a warehouse belonging to the online retailer Wildberries was set ablaze. Ukraine has recently targeted Wildberries, accusing it of handling military goods.

A separate drone strike near Belgorod killed one person, and Ukraine's military said it hit a missile fuel production facility in the Rostov region.

During the attacks, a drone breached Romanian airspace from Moldova. A Spanish F-18 jet on a NATO air policing mission shot it down, marking the fourth such incident this year. Fragments fell in an uninhabited area. Russia's Defence Ministry claimed to have downed 822 Ukrainian drones nationwide.
