Russian drone hits train at Yahodyn station near Poland border after diplomatic convoy departs

A Russian drone struck a train at a railway station close to Ukraine's border with Poland on Sunday, shortly after a diplomatic train carrying senior visiting officials had passed through, Ukraine's state rail operator said.

Video circulated by the Telegram channel Pivden showed the moment of impact at Yahodyn station, with passengers running along the platform as the drone flew in and an explosion occurred.

According to Ukrzaliznytsia, the national railway company, a diplomatic train carrying former U.K. prime minister Boris Johnson, former Swedish prime minister Carl Bildt and security advisers from several European Union states had deliberately left Yahodyn ahead of schedule. The group was returning from a security conference in Kyiv.

"It is highly probable that the Russian drone's intended target was in fact the diplomatic train, which had departed the station earlier than scheduled," the company said in a post on Telegram.

Bildt shared video of the attack at Yahodyn station, near the Yahodyn-Dorohusk border crossing with Poland, on X. "This wasn't our train, but the one just minutes after us by the Polish border crossing," he said. "It was evacuated as the Russian drone approached and no one was hurt. Very good safety system. Our train just had an evacuation warning."

Bildt, Johnson and fellow passengers had been in Kyiv for the Yalta European Strategy conference, an annual gathering of leaders and experts across politics, business, security and media.

A separate train with former CIA director David Petraeus on board was still at Yahodyn station when the drone struck, according to Ukrzaliznytsia.

There were no immediate reports of casualties on any of the trains.

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte said on Monday that Russian drone strikes near the Ukraine-Poland border would push the military alliance to increase its support for Kyiv, describing Sunday's attacks as a sign of Moscow's growing desperation.
