Russian Overnight Strikes Kill Two in Kyiv and Odesa Region

A man was killed when a Russian drone struck a non-residential building in Kyiv overnight into Sunday, Ukraine's State Emergency Service said. In the capital's Solomianskyi district, a separate drone hit a single-story vehicle repair shop, with firefighters working into the early hours to contain the blaze.

In southern Ukraine's Odesa region, one person died and two others were injured in the overnight attack, according to emergency services. Local authorities said the large-scale assault damaged a residential building, a medical facility, a hotel, a store and a grain warehouse.

The strikes are part of an intensifying aerial campaign between Moscow and Kyiv. Russia has deployed cruise and ballistic missiles, glide bombs and jet-powered drones against Ukrainian targets, while front-line progress has slowed more than four and a half years after Moscow launched its full-scale invasion.

The escalation unfolded as U.S. President Donald Trump said he hoped Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy would "settle" with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Writing on Saturday, Zelenskyy said partners must not forget that Russia is escalating daily, and argued that if strikes grow more brutal, the world must respond more strongly to prevent the war from spreading.

While in New York, Zelenskyy appealed to the United Nations to deprive Russia of revenue through sanctions and trade restrictions, cutting off funds he said Moscow needs to prolong the war. Despite years of diplomatic efforts, no breakthrough toward ending the conflict has been reached.
