12 Dead in Sagar After Suspected Toxic Liquor; CM Orders Probe

At least twelve people have died and more than ten others have fallen ill in Madhya Pradesh's Sagar district after allegedly consuming poisonous liquor. The incident has prompted a large-scale response from authorities, including an investigation, medical screenings in affected villages, and the sealing of six liquor shops as a precautionary measure.
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has ordered an inquiry into the deaths and stated that the government will take the strictest possible action against those responsible. He confirmed that ministers and officials have been directed to visit the affected area immediately. "We will take the strictest possible action and conduct an inquiry. Our government will absolutely not tolerate such incidents," Yadav said.
The deaths have raised questions about the enforcement of excise rules in the district. Local reports suggest that a liquor contractor had previously complained to the excise department about the sale of a suspected fake brand marketed as "Bombay Whisky," but no effective action was allegedly taken. Licensed contractors had also reportedly raised concerns about illegal liquor sales during a recent meeting with officials.
Doctors treating the affected individuals have reported symptoms including cyanosis, a bluish discolouration of the body, and muscle rigidity. Chief Medical and Health Officer Devesh Pateria stated that the symptoms could indicate methyl alcohol poisoning, though this has not yet been confirmed. He added that the number of deaths could increase as several people remain under treatment.
Health screening drives are underway in the surrounding villages, including Naura and Ghugru, to identify anyone who may have consumed the suspected liquor. The administration has appealed to residents experiencing symptoms such as vomiting, headache, or fever after drinking to seek immediate medical help.
Authorities are currently investigating the source of the liquor and have collected samples for testing. The exact cause of death will be established only after post-mortem and forensic reports are received.
