Sahyadri Krishi Santhe opens in Shivamogga, draws hundreds of farmers
A two-day agricultural fair in Shivamogga opened Saturday with 150 stalls, drawing hundreds of farmers and residents to the university campus.
The two-day Sahyadri Krishi Santhe opened in Shivamogga on Saturday, drawing hundreds of farmers and local residents on its first day. The event, organised by the Keladi Shivappa Nayaka University of Agricultural and Horticultural Sciences, was inaugurated by Vice-Chancellor M.V. Dhananjaya on the Agriculture College campus at Navule.
Around 150 stalls have been set up for the fair, including roughly 25 nurseries offering saplings of various crops. Representatives of Farmers' Producer Organisations are also present, selling vegetable seeds sourced from native growers. Visitors can explore demonstration plots cultivated by the university on its campus.
Among the exhibitors is Veeresh, a grower from Bedara Hosahalli in Shivamogga taluk, who is selling saplings of guava, lemon grass, and drumstick raised on his farm. Veeresh said he turned to farming after missing out on a career in the Indian Army due to a weight requirement. On just 21 guntas of land, he has built a multi-crop farm growing areca, papaya, lemon grass, and guava, alongside a nursery.
"With hard work and the support of family members, one can earn enough to feed a family," he said. The santhe has given such growers a platform to interact with visitors and share their field experiences.
