Saif Ali Khan Stabbing Accused Seeks to Plead Guilty in Mumbai Court

Mohammad Shariful Islam, the Bangladeshi national accused of stabbing actor Saif Ali Khan at his Bandra residence in January, has filed an application in a Mumbai court seeking to plead guilty to the charges against him.

Islam's lawyer, Vipul Dushing, informed the court of his client's willingness to change his earlier plea of not guilty. The application also requests leniency in sentencing. The court has directed the prosecution to file its response and has adjourned the matter for further hearing on September 11.

The accused faces charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including robbery with a deadly weapon, causing grievous hurt, and house trespass. He also faces additional charges under the Foreigners Act and the Passport (Entry into India) Rules. Additional Sessions Judge G.P. Deshmukh had framed the charges against Islam earlier this month.

The incident occurred on January 16, 2025, at Khan's 12th-floor apartment. Islam is alleged to have repeatedly stabbed the 54-year-old actor during a confrontation. Khan underwent emergency surgery at Lilavati Hospital and was discharged after five days of treatment.

Islam was arrested two days after the attack. At the time, he told Mumbai Police that he stabbed the actor because Khan confronted him during the violent altercation. He has remained in judicial custody since his arrest.
