SP Student Wing Adopts Blue Dress Code in Apparent Dalit Outreach Push

The Samajwadi Party (SP) has announced a new dress code for its student wing, the Samajwadi Party Chhatra Sabha, replacing its traditional red with blue jeans and T-shirts. The change is set to debut at the Chhatra Sabha conference in Lucknow on Tuesday, where office-bearers and workers are expected to appear in the new attire.
The decision is widely seen as a political strategy to broaden the party's appeal among Dalit youth and voters. In Uttar Pradesh's political landscape, colors carry deep symbolic weight. Blue is traditionally associated with Dalit politics and the legacy of B.R. Ambedkar, while the SP has long been identified with red and green.
This shift comes as the SP seeks to expand beyond its traditional Yadav-Muslim support base. The party's PDA (Pichhda, Dalit, Alpsankhyak) formula, which gained traction during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, underscores this outreach effort.
The timing is also notable, with preparations underway for the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. The state's 403-member Assembly currently has 258 BJP legislators, 107 from the SP, and 13 from Apna Dal. The Congress, which is in alliance with the SP, is also eyeing a comeback in the state.
