A Delhi court has remanded Hariram Gupta, owner of a paying guest (PG) accommodation in Satya Niketan, and his wife Urmila Gupta to 14 days of judicial custody in connection with the recent building collapse in the area. Their son, Mahesh Gupta, has been placed in police custody as investigations continue.
The case stems from a First Information Report (FIR) that alleges the four upper floors of the structure were added without adequate regard for the building's load-bearing capacity. The old building reportedly could not support the additional weight, a factor now central to the probe into the collapse.
The judicial custody order comes as authorities piece together the sequence of events that led to the structural failure. Police custody for Mahesh Gupta suggests investigators are seeking his active cooperation in unravelling the decision-making behind the construction work.
The collapse has put a spotlight on illegal construction practices in the capital, with the Gupta family now facing legal scrutiny over the alleged violations.
