Supreme Court Collegium Recommends Elevation of Three High Court Chief Justices

The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the elevation of three High Court Chief Justices to the apex court, setting in motion a fresh round of appointments to the top judiciary.

The recommendation, finalised at a meeting of the Collegium on Monday, names Justice Sunita Agarwal, Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court, Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya, Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court, and Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh, Chief Justice of the High Court for the State of Telangana.

The five-member body that took the decision was led by the Chief Justice of India and included Justices Vikram Nath, B V Nagarathna, M M Sundresh and P S Narasimha.

With the resolution issued, the proposal will now be taken forward in line with the established procedure governing appointments to the Supreme Court. The process typically involves the government's consideration of the Collegium's advice before any formal notification of appointment.

The three judges currently head separate High Courts and, if appointed, would bring their experience of High Court administration to the Supreme Court bench.
