Supreme Court weighs pan-India safety norms for student housing after Satya Niketan collapse
Supreme Court signals it may widen its illegal-construction monitoring to student accommodation nationwide after seven died in the Satya Niketan building collapse.
The Supreme Court has indicated it may broaden its court-monitored scrutiny of illegal constructions and the unauthorised use of residential premises to cover student accommodation across the country, days after seven people were killed in the collapse of an illegally built structure in Delhi's Satya Niketan.
The building was being run as a paying guest facility. A Bench of Justices Ahsanuddin Amanullah and R. Mahadevan said it would take up the matter on Thursday, September 10, 2026.
The court's remarks followed a request from the court-appointed amicus curiae for a time-bound safety audit of PG facilities, private hostels and other student accommodation located in and around colleges across Delhi.
The collapse has focused attention on the safety of housing used by students in the national capital and on the wider question of unauthorised construction and misuse of residential premises. By signalling that its existing exercise could be extended nationwide, the Bench has opened the possibility of uniform scrutiny of such accommodation beyond Delhi.
The matter is listed for Thursday, when the court is expected to consider the amicus curiae's proposal and the scope of any expanded monitoring.
