Supreme Court Questions Andhra Police Over Sai Krishna's Custody Death

The Supreme Court has turned its attention to the circumstances surrounding the death of Sai Krishna, directing the Andhra Pradesh police to explain why the accused was never brought before a court. A three-judge Bench sought the relevant records in a sealed cover as it took up the matter.

The Bench's scrutiny extends beyond the question of production. It has also asked the state police about the delay in registering the First Information Report and about CCTV footage that is missing from the Krishnalanka police station in Vijayawada.

The court indicated that it would intervene if required, but only after the High Court has disposed of the petitions currently pending before it. That sequencing leaves the immediate next steps with the High Court, while the Supreme Court keeps the matter on its radar.

The questions posed by the Bench touch on the core procedural safeguards that govern custodial matters — timely production before a magistrate, prompt registration of an FIR, and the preservation of surveillance evidence. The missing footage from the Krishnalanka police station is central to that last concern.

With records now sought in a sealed cover, the court has signalled that it wants a full account of how the case was handled before deciding whether to step in.
