Schwesig hails trust from voters as SPD celebrates Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania result
Manuela Schwesig thanked voters in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, calling the SPD's projected result a comeback after polling at just 19 percent a year ago.
Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania's Minister-President Manuela Schwesig thanked voters for the outcome of the state election, speaking to supporters at Social Democratic Party (SPD) headquarters in Schwerin.
Schwesig, the SPD's lead candidate and the state's governor, said citizens had shown her great support in recent weeks, approaching her outside polling stations, at church services and in the streets. She said they had expressed a wish for things to continue well in the state and for her to carry on her work, adding that the party had received a great deal of trust.
She said she wanted to live up to that trust together with the SPD in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, and that everyone could count on it.
"What a comeback," Schwesig said in the evening after ARD and ZDF announced their projections. A year ago, the SPD had been polling at just 19 percent.
Schwesig described the contest as the toughest state election to date, and said few would have thought a year ago that the party could make up the ground. She has announced her bid for the office of head of government in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
At the Schwerin event, party members clapped as Schwesig took the stage, with a television screen showing Friedrich Merz in the background.
