Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish Leaders Sign Independence Agreement in Cardiff
Leaders from Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland signed a joint agreement in Cardiff urging the UK government not to obstruct any path to independence.
Leaders from three of the UK's devolved nations gathered in Cardiff on 14 September 2026 to sign a joint agreement calling on the British government not to stand in the way of any move towards independence.
The document was signed by Scotland's First Minister John Swinney, Wales' First Minister Rhun Iorwerth and Northern Ireland's First Minister Michelle O'Neill, alongside Sinn Féin president Mary Lou McDonald.
The four figures appeared together at the signing, where the agreement was formally endorsed and then held up before those present. Each of the leaders also delivered remarks at the event.
The joint statement reflects a shared position among the devolved administrations that the UK government should not obstruct the democratic route to independence for any of the nations they represent.
The gathering in the Welsh capital brought together the heads of the Scottish and Welsh governments with the Northern Ireland First Minister and the Sinn Féin leadership, underlining a coordinated approach across the three devolved regions.
