
Sempra Files for Permits to Add Four LNG Trains at Port Arthur
Sempra's Port Arthur LNG unit has begun federal permitting for a four-train expansion that could add 27 mtpa of export capacity.
Sempra Energy's Port Arthur LNG subsidiary has initiated the federal permitting process for a major expansion of its export terminal in Southeast Texas. The company submitted a regulatory filing on Wednesday outlining plans for the proposed Port Arthur LNG North Project.
The project calls for the construction of four liquefaction trains, each capable of producing up to 6.73 million metric tons per annum (mtpa) of LNG under optimal conditions. Combined, the trains would add roughly 27 mtpa of export capacity to the facility.
In addition to the liquefaction units, the development would include three LNG storage tanks and marine infrastructure with up to two berths for loading tankers. The facilities would be built on land already owned by Port Arthur LNG, according to the filing.
If the project receives approval and moves through construction, exports could begin in the second half of 2034. The company did not disclose an estimated cost for the expansion.
Sempra is already developing Port Arthur Phase 1 and Phase 2, which together have a capacity of 26 mtpa. The North Project would more than double the site's total potential output, reinforcing the Gulf Coast's position as a global LNG export hub.
The move reflects a broader trend among U.S. developers, who have proposed dozens of expansion projects along the Gulf Coast to meet rising international demand for long-term natural gas supplies.
