Senators to Seek Unanimous Consent for Permanent Ban on Chinese Vehicles

Two US senators are moving to make permanent a ban on Chinese vehicles in the United States, seeking swift Senate approval through a unanimous consent request.

Democratic Senator Elissa Slotkin said she and Republican Senator Bernie Moreno, the authors of the bipartisan legislation, would seek unanimous consent on Thursday afternoon. The move comes as President Donald Trump meets with China's President Xi Jinping.

Slotkin said all Democrats back the measure and that only one Republican opposes it. "My understanding is it's 99 to 1," she said.

Unanimous consent allows a bill to advance without a formal roll-call vote, provided no senator objects. With the chamber appearing overwhelmingly supportive, the procedural route could clear the measure quickly if no lawmaker blocks it.

The legislation would write into law a permanent prohibition on Chinese vehicles, building on existing restrictions. Its timing coincides with the high-level meeting between the US and Chinese presidents, though the wire report did not indicate whether the two developments were directly linked.
